Donovan Ties Ralston's Record - MLS Weekly Recap

WEDNESDAY

FC DALLAS 3 SEATTLE 1

David Texeira, making just his 5th start of the year, and first since May, scored twice to propel Dallas to a big 3-1 win over the Seattle Sounders. Texeira scored in the match's opening 10 minutes, but Seattle eventually equalized through a long-range blast by Lamar Neagle. Texeira then put Dallas up for good in the 78th minute and Blas Perez added an insurance goal for Dallas in the closing minutes to put the game out of reach. Prior to Wednesday, Texeira hadn't scored a goal since April. Andres Escobar assisted on both of Texeira's goals.

FRIDAY

NEW ENGLAND 3 SPORTING KC 2

This whole Jermaine Jones to MLS venture is really paying off for the Revs. After New England blew a 2 goal lead in a 3 minute span in the second half, Jones rescued them with a long range strike that found the back of the net and propelled the Revs to yet another win. Since his signing, the Revs have won 5 of 6 games with Jones contributing a goal and three assists. New England is now in second place in the Eastern Conference. Dom Dwyer added his 20th goal of the season in a losing effort for Sporting.

SATURDAY

TORONTO 3 PORTLAND 2

Portland failed to hang onto an early 2-0 lead as Toronto FC battled back behind the first two goals of rookie Nick Hagglund's career and a decisive free kick from Michael Bradley in the closing minute. To make matters even worse for the Timbers, they watched their captain Will Johnson carted off less than a minute into the match with a broken leg. The win keeps Toronto's slim playoff hopes alive, but deals a devastating blow to Portland's who to that point had controlled their own destiny. Hagglund was the 10th overall pick in the 2014 MLS SuperDraft.

DC UNITED 1 PHILADELPHIA 0

Bill Hamid set a career high with his 9th shutout, and Luis Silva continued his break-out season with the game's only goal as United defeated Philadelphia 1-0. The 25 year-old Silva had just 8 goals in his first two seasons with DC and Toronto before exploding for 11 this year. He has 6 in his last 8 games. With the three points, DC extended their Eastern Conference lead to six. Philadelphia, meanwhile, drops into 7th place with their playoff hopes fading.

SEATTLE 4 CHIVAS USA 2

Chivas USA led twice, but couldn't hang on as the Sounders scored the final three goals and hung on for a 4-2 win. Obafemi Martins had a pair of goals and an assist making him just the second player this year to reach double digits in goals and assists this year (the first was Robbie Keane). Lamar Neagle added a goal and an assist as well and Clint Dempsey scored goal number 13 to pace the victors. Erick Torres scored his 15th goal of the year for Chivas USA, but his first since July 20th. The Goats have now lost 7 in a row and are winless in their last 12 (0-11-1).

VANCOUVER 2 REAL SALT LAKE 1

With Nick Rimando getting a rare day off, Jeff Attinella got the start in net for Real Salt Lake and couldn't hang on to a 1-0 lead as Vancouver rallied for a 2-1 win behind 2 goals from Pedro Morales. Nat Borchers had given RSL the lead with a headed goal off a corner, but a penalty served as the equalizer before Morales deflected in the game winner. With the win, Vancouver jumps ahead of Portland in the Western Conference Standings and now control THEIR own destiny for the final playoff spot. Attinella has just one win in nine starts this season for RSL who remain in third place in the West.

COLUMBUS 2 MONTREAL 0

Ethan Finlay scored less than two minutes into the match, and Federico Higuain added an insurance penalty to ensure victory for the Crew. Steve Clark continued his solid run of play in net for Columbus making three saves including the denial of a Marco Di Vaio penalty to preserve the shutout. Clark now has three shutouts in his last four matches and eight on the year as the Crew continue to fight for a playoff spot in the East.

SAN JOSE 1 COLORADO 1

With seconds left on the clock, Atiba Harris unleashed a rocket from the top of the penalty box to snatch victory from the Rapids, and end this match in a 1-1 draw. Gabriel Torres had given Colorado a 1-0 lead in the 84th minute with a nifty volley that beat Jon Busch, but Harris's heroics, set up by some brilliant footwork by Matías Pérez García denied the Rapids a much-needed win. Harris, who spent the 2013 season with Colorado where he scored a career-high 5 goals, has 4 goals for San Jose this year.

SUNDAY

HOUSTON 2 CHICAGO 0

Omar Cummings scored his second goal of the season, and first since the season opener, and Honduran Boniek Garcia added an insurance goal in the second half as Houston held off Chicago 2-0. Florent Sinama-Pongolle made his MLS start up top for the Fire, who have a league-worst 5 wins, but  like the rest of the Fire was unable to solve Houston's Tyler Deric who made three saves to earn the shutout. US World Cup Veterans Brad Davis and Ricardo Clark each had assists. For Davis it was assist number 10 marking the sixth time in his 13 year career that he's had at least 10.

LA GALAXY 4 NEW YORK 0

New York may be regretting throwing in the towel in their Champions League match this week as their rested lineup that included Tim Cahill, Thierry Henry and Bradley Wright-Phillips was decimated by the trio of Landon Donovan, Robbie Keane and Gyasi Zardes. Donovan finished with a goal and three assists, tying Steve Ralston in the process with assist number 135 of his distinguished career. Keane meanwhile added a pair of goals to give him 17 on the year, while the heir apparent, Zardes, scored his 16th, tops among Americans in MLS right now. Meanwhile Jaime Penedo made 6 saves for his 7th shutout of the year. The Galaxy, who are level on points with Seattle, lead the league in goals scored (63) and fewest goals allowed (31).
