CONCACAF Champions League - Match Day 3 Results

Eight more matches in the books including the Red Bulls tournament debut. Hat tricks were the trend as Ariel Rodríguez (Saprissa), Darío Carreño (Pachuca), and Fredickson Elvir (Olimpia) all found the back of the net three times in their respective matches. Here's a quick rundown of all the Round 3 tilts.

TUESDAY

New York Red Bulls 2 CD FAS 0

CD FAS officially became the first team eliminated from the competition as they dropped their third straight to an MLS club, this time 2-0 to the New York Red Bulls. Playing without Bradley Wright-Phillips and Thierry Henry, the Red Bulls were still able to generate enough offense getting goals from Frenchman Saër Sène just two weeks after his trade from New England, and English midfielder Lloyd Sam. Deposed starter Ryan Meara made three saves to earn the shutout.

Comunicaciones 1 América 1

World Cup veteran Oribe Peralta gave América an early 1-0 less than 10 minutes into the match, but Rolando Blackburn's 4th goal of the tournament negated the early strike and the two clubs played to a 1-1 stalemate. The two clubs remain tied on goal differential through 2 matches with the rematch in Mexico City on October 21st potentially deciding who advances from Group 8.

Saprissa 3 Real Estelí 0

Ariel Rodríguez scored 3 times for Saprissa to tie Rolando Blackburn for the tournament's scoring lead with 4 as Saprissa moved to the top of Group 2 with a 3-0 win over Real Estelí. Saprissa now gets ready to travel to the states to take on Sporting Kansas City in three weeks in a match that will be a must-win for the MLS side.

WEDNESDAY

Pachuca 7 Municipal 3

Pachuca fell behind 1-0 early before rallying for 4 first half goals and 3 more after the intermission en route to a wild 7-3 victory over Municipal. After MLS veteran Carlos Ruiz opened the scoring, Pachuca's offense kicked into high gear led by a hat trick from Darío Carreño and a pair of goals from Ariel Nahuelpán. Pachuca now has 11 goals through 2 matches, both wins. Ruiz added a penalty kick goal in the second half for Municipal giving him 3 goals in the tournament. Érick Gutiérrez added his third goal of the tournament for Pachuca.

León 1 Herediano 1

Latecomers Herediano continued to put the pressure on León in Group 7, and only a late goal from substitute Mauro Boselli allowed the Mexican power to avoid a devastating home loss. 22 year old center back Francisco Calvo had given the Costa Rican side a 1-0 lead midway through the second half, but a victory slipped through their fingers thanks to the late concession. León dominated possession holding the ball for more the three quarters of the match, but only held an 11-10 advantage in shots.

THURSDAY

Waterhouse 4 Tauro 1

Waterhouse defeated Tauro for the second time in 3 weeks, this time 4-1 behind a pair of goals from Jermaine Anderson. Damarley Samuels and Nicko Williams also added goals for Waterhouse as they moved ahead of idol DC United and atop Group 4 with 6 points through 3 matches. Jose Garces had the loan goal for Tauro FC.

Olimpia 6 Alpha United 0

Alpha United became the second team to be eliminated from the competition getting throttled on the road by Olimpia 6-0. Fredickson Elvir tallied a hat trick and Anthony Lozano added a pair of goals to lead the route, while midfielder Oliver Morazan also got in on the action. Olimpia now sits in first place atop Group 5 with a +7 goal differential, three points ahead of the Portland Timbers whom they will face in three weeks.

Alajuelense 1 Chorrillo 0

Alajuelense got an early goal from Armando Alonso, his second in two matches, and that was all they'd need as they held of Chorrillo 1-0 to take over the lead in Group 6.
